词源解说：传说一万多年以前在世界第二大洋大西洋上本来有一个名叫Atlantis的大陆，大陆上还有个王国，以后可能因地震而沉于海底。古希腊哲学家柏拉图在其作品《蒂迈乌斯篇及克利梯阿斯篇》（Tirnaeus and Critias）中第一次提到它。大西洋的名字Atlantic可能即源于此。另有一种说法认为Atlantic得名于非洲西北部的Atlas山脉。但不论是Atlantis大陆还是Atlas山脉，名称又都起源于希腊神话中以肩顶天的巨神Atlas，因此可以说Atlantic即源于Atlas。
